Tradition identifies Archangel Michael as the leader who remained faithful to God and cast Lucifer down at God's command. The Church has long invoked his powerful aid during times of emergency. Throughout history, Popes have called upon Archangel Michael as the special protector of the Church whenever great evils threatened God's people. For this reason, Archangel Michael is especially revered in places like Rome, Monte Gargano near Foggia in Italy, and Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, France. In moments of great danger, when the devil’s malice seems overwhelming, Archangel Michael will come to our aid.
 
Historically, Michaelmas was a significant holiday, often regarded as the Christian counterpart to the autumn equinox. In England, it marked the beginning of a new quarter, a time for electing officials, signing contracts, paying rent, hiring servants, holding court, and starting the school year—a tradition that still influences our modern practices.
 
This period also coincides with noticeable changes in weather. In Italy, it’s said, "For St. Michael, heat ascends to the heavens." In Ireland, people anticipate a marked decrease in illness.
