October 29 – Day of the Forgotten & Drowned Souls
This date sits inside Allhallowtide, the 3-day spiritual window leading into Samhain / Día de los Muertos / All Souls Day.
The belief is that on October 29, the veil begins to loosen specifically for:
Spirits who died suddenly
Those who drowned
Those whose bodies were never recovered
Souls who have no family left to pray for them
The restless dead / wandering souls
Souls in spiritual “coldness” or liminality
In Spanish folk belief, these spirits are often called:
Ánimas del Agua (Spirits of the Water)
Ánimas Olvidadas (Forgotten Souls)
Ánimas Solares / La Ánima Sola (The Lonely Soul)
Ánimas de Purgatorio (Souls in transition)
🌊 Why October 29 Specifically?
Traditionally:
The 29th is a liminal number in folk numerology — a “threshold day.”
It leads directly into the opening of the All Souls Gate (Oct 31–Nov 2).
In many coastal and river communities, this was the day people called the drowned home for peace, warmth, and remembrance — so they would not return restless.
It is believed that a soul who is remembered cannot harm, but a soul who is ignored may linger, attach, or seek warmth through the living.
So the purpose of honoring is:
To bring peace, light, and direction to souls who are trapped, wandering, or cold.
🕯️
A short prayer you can post or use in ritual:
On this day, I light for the forgotten.
For the drowned, the lost, the unnamed, the unseen.
May you find warmth, rest, and remembrance.
May your path be clear and your journey be blessed.
I give you water for your thirst, light for your road, and peace for your spirit.
Go with love, go with God, go with the Ancestors.
🌊 To honor them:
Place a glass of fresh water
Light a white candle
Offer bread or flowers
Say a few words of compassion
Souls who are remembered rest.
Souls who are honored do not wander.
