Who Is Saint Martha?
Saint Martha appears in the New Testament as the sister of Mary and Lazarus and is remembered for her hospitality, faith, devotion, and strong personality. She is the patron saint of homemakers, cooks, servers, innkeepers, travelers, and others who care for and provide for people.
One of the best-known legends surrounding Saint Martha comes from Provence, France. According to tradition, a terrifying creature known as the Tarasque was causing destruction near the town of Tarascon. Martha confronted the beast, subdued it through prayer and holy water, and led it peacefully back to the village.
Because of this image of Martha calmly mastering a fearsome dragon, she became strongly associated with courage, protection, domination over difficult circumstances, and spiritual authority.
In Hoodoo and other folk-spiritual traditions, she is often lovingly referred to as Saint Martha the Dominator.
How to Use Saint Martha Oil
Use this oil to anoint candles, petitions, spiritual tools, or yourself before prayer and ritual work.
For candle work, dress a white, green, red, or purple candle depending on your intention. You may also use a dedicated Saint Martha candle or novena candle.
A traditional devotional practice is to work with Saint Martha on nine consecutive Tuesdays.
Each Tuesday:
1. Light your candle.
2. Anoint it with Saint Martha Oil.
3. State your petition clearly.
4. Recite your Saint Martha prayer.
5. Follow with one Our Father, three Hail Marys, and one Glory Be.
Many devotees also make a charitable offering in Saint Martha’s honor after receiving assistance, especially to organizations helping women, children, families, or animals.
Saint Martha Prayer
Saint Martha, I come to you with faith and place my petition before you.
I offer you this light, which I shall burn each Tuesday for nine Tuesdays.
Comfort me in my difficulties through the favor you enjoyed when our Savior was welcomed into your home.
Have mercy upon me regarding the favor I now ask: [State your petition.]
Intercede for my family, that we may always be provided for in our necessities.
Saint Martha, as you overcame the dragon beneath your feet, help me overcome the obstacles standing before me.
Amen.
